Google Built a Chip to Make Your AI Tools Way Cheaper
TLDR: Google is building a special chip called Frozen v2 that bakes its Gemini AI right into the hardware, and it could run Google's AI 6 to 10 times more efficiently starting around 2028.
The Story:
Google is working on a new server chip, nicknamed "Frozen v2," that builds the design of its Gemini AI model straight into the silicon. The people making it think it could be 6 to 10 times more efficient than Google's current AI chips, and it could arrive as early as 2028. It's separate from Google's TPUs, the custom AI chips Google has built since 2016 and now on their seventh version (called Ironwood). The trick is cutting down how much data the chip has to shuffle around, which makes it faster at answering your questions. And Google isn't alone. Amazon runs its Trainium chips, Microsoft has one called Maia, Meta builds a line named MTIA, and Nvidia still sells the all-purpose chips (GPUs) that most of the industry leans on today. Even OpenAI and Anthropic are now designing their own.
Its Significance:
Running AI is expensive, and a big slice of that cost is the electricity and hardware answering your questions every single time you type. A chip that's up to 10 times more efficient means Google can run AI for far less money. In your life, that usually shows up as cheaper or free AI tools and faster replies. It's also a sign of a bigger trend: the giant tech companies are tired of paying Nvidia so much, so they're building their own chips to escape the bill. In the coming token price wars, everyone is finding ways to cut costs.

The story: Hugging Face, the largest home for open-source AI models, says an automated AI agent broke into its systems through a booby-trapped dataset and grabbed some internal files and login keys. Public models and user files weren't changed, and the company used its own AI to sort through 17,000+ of the attacker's actions in hours instead of days.
Your takeaway: An AI platform getting hacked by an AI shows where security is heading. If you use Hugging Face, rotating your access tokens is a smart move right now.
