Welcome to this Sunday recap edition of Beginners in AI, where we explore the latest trends, tools, and news in the world of AI and the tech that surrounds it. Like all editions, this is human curated and edited, and published with the intention of making AI news and technology more accessible to everyone.

THE FRONT PAGE
Your Inbox Had a Rough Week
TLDR: In five days, one company bought 100 million emails from a dead airline, ChatGPT got read access to every text on your Mac, and two assistants were handed the keys to inboxes with almost nothing standing in the way.
The Story:
Start with the purchase. Google won a bankruptcy auction for Spirit Airlines' internal business data, paying $10 million for roughly 100 million employee emails, 500 million Teams chats, and 30 million lines of code, all of it headed for AI training. Spirit shut down in May and cut about 17,000 jobs. Those people's work chats are now an asset someone else owns. Three days later OpenAI shipped an Apple Messages plugin that reads and searches your whole iMessage and SMS history and writes replies for you. Setup asks for Full Disk Access, one switch that also opens your Mail, your Safari data, and your Time Machine backups. In between, Anthropic gave Claude the ability to send, reply to, and forward Gmail, with the ask-first setting switchable off. And researchers at Varonis got Microsoft Copilot to explain how to attack it just by asking how it worked, then used that to pull data from a victim's connected Gmail, Drive, and Calendar. Microsoft patched it Tuesday.
Its Significance:
Each of these looks reasonable on its own. Together they describe a week where the layer between an AI and your private messages got thinner four separate times. The Copilot case is unfortunate because it also punishes the merely curious who would ask the software how it works without malicious intent. Researchers asked it how it worked and it told them, since "explain yourself" and "help me break in" both achieved their aim in testing its vulnerabilities. Signal president Meredith Whittaker warned last year that we'd trade privacy for a "magic genie bot" that handles the small demands of life. Texting your mom back is one of those. If you connected an assistant to your inbox this week, the useful thing to do today is open its settings and read what it has saved about you.
QUICK TAKES
The Wrapper Around the Model Started Mattering More Than the Model
The story: Nvidia published results showing its AVO system finished all 183 levels of the ARC-AGI-3 test, using Claude Opus 5, which scores about 30% running alone. Nvidia added memory that survives between sessions and a supervisor that nudges the model when it stalls. Separately, researchers at Konstanz found groups of agents stayed coordinated at 1,000 members with no leader, and a method called HOST let a robot copy a human after one 29-second clip.
Your takeaway: Most AI news asks which model is smartest. This week said the scaffolding counts too. Nvidia's said it clearly: the model matters, but the model is not the entire agent. Worth knowing there's more room in the tools we already have(and pay a lot for) than the model scores suggest.
Two Stories About Kids and Chatbots
The story: OpenAI launched ChatGPT for Teens, a separate version with study tools, parental Quiet Hours, and blocks on self-harm and romantic talk. It won't claim to have feelings. Meanwhile US public schools that spent two years banning chatbots are now inviting them in so students can watch them fail. At one teacher training, an AI tool was asked to draw a map of the world and the room laughed at what came back.
Your takeaway: More than 70% of US teens have used chatbots for company, so both moves arrive years after the behavior did. The classroom version is a great idea. A safer product still gets used more; a kid who has watched one be confidently wrong checks the next answer.
A Third of the Web Written Since 2022 Shows AI Fingerprints
The story: Pew ran nearly half a million English pages through a detection tool and found AI signals on 35% of everything published after ChatGPT launched. Commercial .com sites showed it about ten times as often as .edu and .gov. German researchers separately found listeners rated AI songs higher until they were told the source, then paid less for them. MIT found that past a certain dataset size, you can't trace an AI image back to any one artist.
Your takeaway: Pew tracked the tells, and em dash use has doubled since 2023. That says a lot about how little most people edit before publishing. The music study points at the real cost: the drop wasn't about quality, it was about whether the work felt like it came from a person. If you use AI at work, sounding like yourself is now the skill. Do this by continually telling the model what works and what does not.
TOOL OF THE WEEK
📝 Standard Notes Free and Open Source
Twenty tools ran this week, and this is the one that fits it. Standard Notes is a notepad that encrypts everything you write, so nobody else can read it, including the people who make it. Given a week where four separate products got closer to your private messages, a place to write things down that stays yours is worth ten minutes to set up.
Runner-up: SearXNG, a search engine that pulls results from many sources without keeping your history. Same idea, different door.

200,000 fake AI victims are answering scam calls all day - Australian company Apate runs bots with their own voices, accents, and thinking noises, trained on recordings of real people stringing scammers along. In six weeks they handled 600,000 calls for one phone company and burned more than 500 days of scammer time. They collect crypto wallet addresses while they talk and pass them to banks. The company tracks how often scammers swear at them as a monthly metric. This was my favorite story of the week.
Stripe told investors the singularity started January 1st, then bought OpenRouter - In the same letter, Stripe said it has run the business for eight months on the assumption the singularity began, and confirmed it's buying OpenRouter for a reported $7.5 billion, up from a $1.3 billion valuation in May. OpenRouter routes prompts to whichever model fits, so Stripe now sees which models people pay for and how much they spend.
Anthropic's IPO filing will list public anger as a business risk - Sources told CNBC the prospectus, expected within weeks, names backlash against AI and data centers in its risk section. A May Gallup poll found seven in ten Americans oppose a data center near them, and the company needs more of them to grow.
Google is giving US college students a free year of AI Pro - That's a $19.99 a month plan with higher Gemini limits, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, and 5TB of storage, plus a student section with flashcards and quizzes built from your own lecture slides. Students in 140 other countries get AI Plus free instead. Whichever assistant a 19-year-old picks is the one they'll still use at 25.
Pennsylvania is making data centers pay for their own grid impact - Governor Josh Shapiro signed an order requiring centers over 25 megawatts to get local approval and report water and power use starting July 2027. More than 100 have been proposed in the state and only 20 have filed permits.
Slack put coding agents into the group chat - Tag an agent in Slack and it opens its own channel where the team watches the work, reviews changes, and signs off before anything ships. Claude Code, Devin, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, and Vercel's agent all launched with it. Free on any Slack plan, though you still pay for the agents.
Anthropic is putting an invisible watermark in everything Claude writes - The mark hides in word choice and phrasing, added to meet an EU rule that took effect August 2, and the company released a free checker so anyone can test a piece of text for it. Anthropic also admits the mark washes out if you rewrite the text heavily or run it through a translator, and people are already trading methods for doing exactly that. The other reason is likely that they want to show investors how much of the internet uses Claude, with their IPO on the stock market coming up soon.

Five prompts ran this week and they were all live-search apps. Thursday's wins on how often you'd reach for it. A vacation town or a sunset spot comes up a few times a year. Deciding where to eat comes up every week.

Return raw JSON: found (boolean), restaurant_name, neighborhood, dish_name, why_this (2-3 specific sentences), practical_note (optional, e.g. reservations/cash-only/waits), backup (a real alternate: restaurant_name, dish_name, why).
Render: a gradient "go here, order this" hero card with the dish name, restaurant, neighborhood, the why-this reasoning, and a "Open in Google Maps" link built client-side from a maps search URL (no API key needed, just encodeURIComponent(restaurant + city)). WHERE WE STAND (based on this week's news)
✅ AI Can Now: Read your whole text message history on a Mac, write replies that sound like you, and send them.
❌ Still Can't: Tell your instructions apart from instructions hidden inside a link or a page it reads. That's how the Copilot attack worked.
✅ AI Can Now: Finish all 183 levels of a reasoning test it was given no rules for, once memory and a supervisor are wrapped around a model that scores about 30% alone.
❌ Still Can't: Show the same score on the harder private test set. Nvidia flags that limit itself.
✅ AI Can Now: Design protein binders that stick to 14 of 15 disease targets, with 22% to 35% of individual designs working in lab tests.
❌ Still Can't: Say which training images shaped a picture it made. MIT found that past a certain dataset size, removing any single one changes nothing.
