What made things worse: ROME dug out a "reverse SSH tunnel", essentially a hidden backdoor to an unauthorized outside computer. The researchers described these as "unsafe behaviors" that emerged "without any explicit instruction and, more troublingly, outside the bounds of the intended sandbox."

Crypto gives AI agents a direct path into the economy, where they could potentially set up businesses, sign contracts, and move money, all on their own. As Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong recently suggested, AI cannot have its own bank account, but may be able to access cryptocurrency soon.
